Musings on a content of Contributions From a Potential Corpse, Volume II. [Eugene Halliday]
"Judaism gave the Law (Torah) of prohibition of undesirable actions".
This was to counter the over-reaction to a wrong that may have been felt. An eye for an eye replaced the previous response of a life for an eye. It still applies today, when for a minor misdeed someone might say, 'they should be put up against a wall and shot'.
"Christianity taught Neighbourly Love as the real meaning of Judaic Law".
Who is your neighbour? Any person who is nearby. Codes of conduct are generally set up for those who ignore, or are unable to adhere to this principle of neighbourly love. In civilised societies, duty replaces what a loving person would do anyway.
But what is love? It is more than affection or a sense of duty. Love is the power that works for the development of potential. Civilised societies can often be developed into syphilised societies, in which words are guarded and no-one really means what they say. And people who don't mean what they say have meaningless lives.
In the loveless hands of the 'Holy' Roman Empire terrible acts of cruelty were perpetrated on populations all over the world, in the name of Christianity.
"Islam taught knowledge as the means of realising the purposes of love".
Amongst Moslems, the Sufis have come closest to appreciating this knowledge. Feeling into his deepest being, Rumi offers these words from his heaven within.
Again, similar to early Christianity, many destructive forces have been brought to bear under the guise of Islam. It seems man will use any tool available to further his own private purpose.
The extract concludes with:
"It is not enough to know what not to do, what is unprofitable (Judaism). It is not enough to have a feeling of love towards neighbours (Christianity). It is not enough to know all the means of realising the purposes of love. One must be able to co-ordinate these three attitudes and to activate oneself in accord with their co-ordination.
"Thus a fourth religion is to arise, teaching co-ordinated application of Law, Love and Knowledge. But this fourth religion uses only past experience data, which include logic as an empirically derived science.
"A fifth religion would be the religion of pure Creativity, the religion which devotes itself to the disclosure of infinities of totally new possibilities, so far uncovered by man."
